You are on the right track. You are eating more vegetables and less saturated fat. You have a gym membership and go three to four times a week. You also climb the stairs religiously instead of being crammed in the elevator with 10 other co-workers trying to make it to the office floor before eight o’clock in the morning. And you are saying “no” more than “yes” when it comes to those yummy doughnuts that seem to always be calling your name in the break room at the office. And yet something feels like it is missing?

At one point in your life, the above may have been “enough” to be living a healthy active lifestyle. It is no anymore! This is where greening up your healthy active lifestyle comes in. It means you are taking more responsibility for your actions as a consumer and your realizing your impact on the environment. The light bulb did not just click on; it is shining brightly and annoyingly in your eyes. As you squint at the glaring light of your “ah ha moment”, you think: “Your environment and material consumption plays a significant role in your health and overall wellbeing. So why not do something about your consumption and environmental impact to improve your health and wellbeing?”

You must keep progressing forward, evolving to accommodate the ever-growing need to become a better you. This is why you are here. To read about ways to green up your already healthy active lifestyle. You can now dim that light bulb of an idea to better read the following tips on greening up your active healthy lifestyle.

Quality over quantity. When purchasing products, remember quality products that will last years to come are much better than lots of poor quality products that will just need to be tossed a year later. Quality products are efficient at their “job,” multi-functional, durable, and made from recycled and natural materials. Check out how products rate for their “greenness” and healthiness here.

Toss the smelly stuff. When it comes to detergents, soaps, perfumes, deodorants, lotions, and air fresheners, no smell is best. All those synthetic perfumes added are only chemicals faking your nose out, giving you the false sense of security that things are clean and “fresh.” Stick with the products that are free of dyes and perfumes. Therefore, if it doesn’t smell or look dirty, it is truly clean and much healthier for you and your smeller. Check out our other articles on scents and dyes here and here.

If it is a nice day go out and play. If the sun is shining, go out and enjoy it! You may have that gym membership, but why workout watching yourself in the mirror or worse the rear end of the guy in front of you when you could be hiking, running or biking out doors, enjoying mother nature. If you feel like you just cannot give up that workout at your fancy gym, then consider biking, running or walking to your gym for the cardio portion of your workout.

STOP! Don’t throw those old sneakers out. Although your old tennis shoes may seem tattered and carrying a one-way ticket to the landfill, think again. Companies such as Nike, recycle tennis shoes. Check it out here.

Paper? Plastic? No, cloth please. You do not need to use paper or plastic anymore to bag the wonderful produce you purchase once or twice a week. Re-useable cloth bags are what you need. Buy a handful of small re-useable and washable mesh or cloth produce bags along with some large canvas grocery bags. And WAH LAH! You are on your way to being a green, lean consumer. Check out some bag options here and here.

This is just the beginning of something great! It is the beginning of you seeing beyond eating a handful of delectable green leafy vegetables and running a few miles. This is about improving your entire life. Take the feeling you felt when all that hard work paid off and you got into shape and times that by 10, times it by 20, or better yet times it by a hundred. When you start greening up your life, it is no longer just about being healthy and active. It becomes about your kids, your spouse, your future. In the past, areas in your life such as what bags you used for your groceries probably seemed insignificant. Not now. Now you see how all these little details are part of a much bigger picture. A picture that involves the world around you and the connection it has on your overall wellbeing.
