The Last Word: A Response to "We Are Wall Street" Leaflets

On Wednesday October 26, 2011 "We are Wall Street" leaflets were dropped on the Chicago Occupy Protesters. You can find the full length of the note here:

Although I think the note was humorous more than anything else, I thought it would be just as fun and interesting to use the same format and write it from our [99%] perspective.

"Guess what: you will become an Average Joe."
And here is what I came up with.

"We are the Average Joes. It’s our responsibility to exercise our rights and freedoms. Whether it’s free speech, the right to peacefully assemble, or boycott products and companies. It doesn’t matter. We are willing to live in tents through the winter to exercise our rights and power. You were not listening to the complaints about your negligible practices because the market was roaring to 13,000 and because those who were fortunate enough to have 401ks had them double every 3 years. Just like gambling, we are all bound too lose eventually. We, the Average Joes, did lose, and now recognize the pitfalls to gambling.

Well, now that the truths about the financial industries’ practices are being revealed, we – the Average Joes – are looking for real solutions to very real problems. God knows that fixing serious problems is never easy. Well, here we are.

Go ahead and continue to act like your actions do not have consequences, but you’re only going to hurt yourselves. What’s going to happen when you can’t find jobs on the Street anymore? Guess what: you will become an Average Joe. We get up at the crack of dawn and work until sunset. We’re not used to taking regular breaks because we are often short staffed. We demand healthy work environments conducive to us being the most productive workers we can be. We don’t retire at 50 because we lost what little extra money we did have on Wall Street. We eat what we can afford, which is not always the best for you; but you will find out soon enough when you become an Average Joe.

For years, financial investors and corporate executives had us fooled. We were too busy working to notice though. Do you really think we can’t financially survive without you? We are going to take back our country and rebuild it without you. Say good-bye to your cushy life, as you know it. We - the Average Joes - will be working together to rebuild our communities, democracy and quality of life. We will be happy, healthy and secure in our new American lives. We don’t care about the $80k cars, and the 35 percent tip at business dinners. It is only self-righteous people like you, who think that is what makes our country tick. Our talents, work ethics and individuality will be recognized and valued. We’re going be able to focus more on our communities, homes and families because we will not have to do your landscaping and wash your cars just to make ends meet. Our future is not dependent on your money. You have used up all of our money. When our money dries up, so does yours.

The difference is, you live to make money, and we live for our family and community. You are not being knocked off the top of the pyramid by politicians, you are being consumed by the Average Joes who out number you; and it is going to hurt like hell. You aren’t dinosaurs because if you were you would already be extinct. But you have worn out your welcome. We are smarter and more vicious than you, and we are going to survive and succeed. The question is, when you become an Average Joe will you be able to survive."
