Fun & Healthy Ideas for the 4th of July

3 Jul. 2013 Posted by Hannah Mich

We all have traditions when it comes to celebrating the 4th of July. Unfortunately many of them may not be the healthiest, especially when it comes to the food and sedentary activities. Here are 8 tips on making your 4th a healthier and happier one.

1. Make a fruit salad in place of a sugary dessert for your cookout

2. Make homemade frozen yogurt or gelato instead of a fatty and sugar filled homemade ice cream

3. Participate in your local parade where you will be doing a lot of walking instead of just sitting and being a spectator

4. Play fun outdoor activities instead of just lounging in the yard: horseshoes, bean bag toss and frisbee.

5. Offer fruit juices, ice water and unsweetened ice tea instead of soda
6. Walk to your local fireworks instead of driving

7. Catch fireflies with the kids and place in jars - then have a grand release of all the glowing "fairies" at the night's end. This is a great alternative with young kids that are just not ready to handle sparklers

8. Use paper plates and cups that are made from recycled paper. With a marker have everyone mark their plate and cup (name or word) so that they can use it all day and night.

Happy 4th of July!
