What We Can Do: Consumer Power

trade deficit, imports, exports, made in China, made in U.S.A

My husband and I joined my parents on their search for some christmas gifts for the grandkids. Our shopping was particularly interesting because my parents recently made the decision to avoid products made in specific countries, particularly China, and try to purchase as many products as possible made in the United States. We were shopping at a mall with many popular stores in it, such as Kohl's, Gap and Sears.

Cloth versus Tissue Paper

kleenex, facial tissue, paper towel, toilet paper, cloth, towels, handkerchiefs

The United States consumes the most tissue paper in the world with each citizen consuming on average 55 lbs of tissue paper a year. This includes toilet paper, facial paper/kleenex, napkins and paper towels. We need to reduce our paper consumption because it is wasteful and a threat to our forests and trees. Brands that you should absolutely avoid are Kleenex and Puffs because they use ZERO recycled material in their products, including facial tissue.

At 3pm there was a teach-in led by Professor Aisha Karim. It started out exploring Marx and the "Communist Manifesto." But it soon let to a very democratic discussion about alternative systems to capitalism. Many who spoke talked about the fact that the words "socialism" and "communism" scare off a lot of people.

Chill Out: Learn to relax

stress relieve, stressors, health risk factors, immune system, reduce stress

Stress plays a significant role in our overall health. High stress levels can contribute to indigestion, anxiety, weight gain and a poor immune system, which makes you more susceptible to illness. No drug you take can truly fix your health problems if you do not learn to eliminate the source of these problems. Of course western medicine tries to treat such ailments with prescription medication, but it is failing miserably at really improving the health of the average American.

Rose -- More Than Just A Pretty Flower

rose oil, rose hips, flower, alternative medicine

Roses, they are symbolic of love and friendship. They are used as the back drop for many landscapes, while their scent is made into perfumes. But they are more than this beautiful flower with a heavenly scent. Once again our culture has forgotten about what a rose is or what it can be. And the lose is entirely ours. The rose is like a pretty girl who is too often seen as she looks and her character and intelligence is forgotten. The rose plant has many uses that could benefit a great number of people.

Rose oil can help treat:
