Seasons

seasons, autumn

On days like today I wonder how people live in areas without four distinct seasons. For me at least, the different seasons are a welcoming change not only in temperature, but in how they drastically alter the landscape. Well, today's cooler damp weather so unlike summer makes me long for fall or autumn -- my favorite season. Autumn brings a relieve to the high temperatures of summer, it turns the once lush green leaves on trees into varies colors such as orange, yellow and red. With autumn comes the harvest of squash, pumpkins and apples.

Stand up to corporations

Hot Coffee, documentary, customer service, corporation,

The Documentary "Hot Coffee" dives into the callousness of large corporations who appear to care little about the well-being of the people they are suppose to be providing services and products for. I think consumers need to come together and use social websites to show these companies the power we have as consumers and that we are not always at the mercy of them and the government. Check out a clip from the movie at http://www.citizen.org/hot-coffee

Our role in the safety of our neighborhood & sidewalks

I have often thought about what makes me feel safer in one area of the city compared to another. What makes us gravitate towards walking on one street or in one neighborhood, but not another one? Interestingly, I read this quote while reading the book "the Death and Life of Great American Cities" by Jane Jacobs

Thinking Outside of The Box means.....

critical thinking, problem solving, analyze, solutions

Most of us have heard of the expression "Think outside of the box"; but have you really considered what that entails? Well, luckily I have had my high school teachers, college professors and parents telling me to think outside of the box for most of my life. Therefore, I have put some thought into what it means or at least what I think it means.

Chirping of Birds Trumps the Honking of Car Horns

I am sitting in my living room with the windows open. I hear the low rumble of the train going by, which is about 2-3 blocks away; I hear the humming of the traffic passing my building 30 feet away; I hear the soft stomping of feet of the residents living on the floor above us. But what I struggle to hear is the cardinals, robins, finches and sparrows right outside my window on a tree branch happily chirping away. Even though their songs are often muffled by the everyday sounds or "noises" of the city, they are there persistently and enthusiastically chirping.

Filters for Filters

So we have filters for our drinking water, which I thought our water was suppose to be clean; we have air purifiers/filters to clean the air in our homes, which many assume is already clean air; and we have filters on our AC and Furnaces. I also realized I have TWO filters on my vacuum, which makes me think that either the vacuum company assumes my house is extremely filthy or dust is really really bad. Filters I think may serve a good purpose for human health, but instead I feel like they are just being used as a band-aid to cover a cut that is not healing.
