This year there is a lot of debate over retail store hours because many stores are opening on Thanksgiving evening. Some believe it is going to become "Black Thursday" and "Black Friday" will become a thing of the past. Stores that are opening Thanksgiving evening include Target, Walmart, Toys R Us, and Kmart. They claim that it is what their customers want -- shopping on Thanksgiving. Is this a simple supply and demand situation? Are stores just meeting the needs of consumers? Not likely.

I love the holiday season. I have so many wonderful memories from my childhood and it just is a time of year that puts a smile on my face. The lights, the music, family get togethers and holiday parades. Then there is the food. The delicious, home-made food. The smell of roasted turkey, baked rolls, stuffing and pumpkin pie makes my mouth water. So I thought I would share a few simple recipes that I make either for Thanksgiving dinner or Thanksgiving leftovers.

This movement, in part, got started because it exposed citizens who were being exploited by the government and economic system. The anger and pure emotion of the protesters has resonated with a lot of people around the world and has propelled this movement forward. But in order for the movement to evolve and assist with fixing our national [and global] problems, it is going to need more than “romanticism,” or emotion, to survive and thrive.

A Preventable Disease: Diabetes

Diabetes is a metabolic disease that inhibits the body’s ability to control blood sugar levels. According to the American Diabetic Association over 26 million Americans suffer from diabetes with 79 million at a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. At this rate, it is estimated that 1 in 3 Americans will suffer from diabetes by 2050.

Proud of My Community

Just last week Evanston, IL passed 10 ideas for improving the community, including making it more green. Prior to deciding on the top ten ideas, they [Evanston150] had a website where ideas were posted and then they had the residents of Evanston vote on the top 30. Out of the top 30 a committee picked the top 10, which are available here
